Live Sound Sabotage: An Exploration of Workflow and Best Practices

Mon, Dec 7 | 03:30 PM - 05:00 PM
Booth 5004

Session details:

Successful live sound is about more than just knowing how to operate the equipment. A thoughtful workflow can prevent problems before they happen, aid in the troubleshooting process, and help create a safer experience for all.

This course explores best practices for preparing, building, operating, and troubleshooting live sound systems. Participants will examine planning and documentation, equipment setup, signal flow, line checks/soundchecks, file management, cable management, hearing conservation, and safe operating practices. Emphasis will be placed on developing repeatable workflows that make systems easier to operate and maintain while gaining hands-on troubleshooting experience in a controlled environment.

Participants will learn a systematic approach to problem-solving: identifying symptoms, tracing signal flow, establishing the problem(s), changing one variable at a time, and testing the results of those changes. Along the way, we will explore communication methods in conjunction with strategies for working calmly when issues show up. This class places emphasis on the importance of making intentional technical decisions.

By the end of the course, participants will have a practical framework for approaching live sound work while keeping safety, efficiency, and effective communication in mind.
