Intro to Live Sound Mixing for Theatre

Sun, Dec 6 | 03:00 PM - 04:30 PM
Booth 5004

Session details:

Mixing sound for theatre can be considered a performance of its own. The operating engineer must balance technical precision with active listening, anticipation, and an intimate understanding of the production in order to execute the sound design consistently. In addition, they must have the skill to respond to the live performance onstage, and the surprises that come with it.

This course explores the process of preparing, rehearsing, and executing a theatrical mix. Participants will examine script preparation, console and show-file organization, scene changes, cue execution, microphone management, playback, effects, and approaches to balancing all audio elements of a production. We will introduce methods for DCA-based mixing, managing casts, balancing vocals, and developing the sound operator’s choreography for a show.

Throughout the class, emphasis will be placed on active listening and using console programming/automation to support the mixing engineer. Participants will also explore strategies for maintaining consistency, adapting to changes, and recovering from technical or operational problems while the show continues.

By the end of the course, participants will have a practical framework for approaching theatrical productions, along with an understanding of the specialized techniques used to execute a mix in this setting.
