Designing The World Of Santa Carla: Lighting for ‘The Lost Boys’ on Broadway”

Sun, Dec 6 | 04:00 PM - 05:30 PM

Session details:

Meet the lighting team and explore what it takes to design the lighting for an award-winning Broadway musical, The Lost Boys, which won four Tony Awards, making it one of this year's biggest winners. Awards include the Tony Award for Best Lighting Design in a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lighting Design of a Musical.

The Lost Boys is an electrifying new musical that follows a single mother and her two sons as they move to the seemingly idyllic beach town of Santa Carla. As the eldest son, Michael, searches for a sense of belonging, he is drawn to a local rock band and its charismatic leader, whose dark secret pulls him into a dangerous new world. Equal parts thrilling and heartfelt, the musical is a story about family, belonging, and, of course, vampires.

Lighting designers Jen Schriever and Michael Arden, along with their team, brought the world of Santa Carla to life in a stunning visual landscape that merged new technologies with old theatrical techniques to light four stories of scenery, flying vampires, motorcycle chases, and the iconic scene atop a trestle bridge from the 1987 film.
