Audio Basics

Session details:

Build a practical foundation in the principles behind modern sound engineering. This course follows audio from its beginnings as a sound wave, through the signal chain, and back into the live acoustic environment. This will give participants a working model for understanding the fundamentals of sound systems.

Participants will explore the scientific characteristics of sound and acoustics before moving into transducers, signal flow, gain staging, and console routing. The course will introduce common digital signal processing tools including EQ, compression, gates, delay, and reverb with an emphasis on understanding when and why each tool is used. Participants will also examine sound pressure level (SPL), safe listening practices, and the causes/prevention of feedback.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to trace a signal through a basic live sound system, identify the purpose of its major components, make informed decisions about routing and processing, and apply foundational concepts to troubleshoot common audio problems.
