TILL-Index: A New Orientation Value Between Technology and Art in Lighting Design
Session details:
The TILL-Index – Theoretical Indexing of Lighting Levels – is a newly developed model for the quantitative description of lighting design in the context of artistic events. The index combines photometric data, spatial parameters, and audience numbers with an artistic weighting factor to enable more differentiated analysis of the relationship between deployed light and its perception. The aim of this presentation is to introduce the systematic approach and application possibilities of this model whilst stimulating critical discussion about the interaction between lighting technology, perception, and creative intent.
Presentation Content:
- Introduction to the necessity of quantitative models in lighting design.
- Presentation of the three value groups of the TILL-Index (luminous flux/illuminance, spatial dimensions, audience numbers)
- Explanation of the artistic weighting factor and its adaptability
- Application examples from theatre, concert, and festival productions
- Discussion of the potential for data collection, comparability, and AI-supported analysis
- Integration into broader questions of sustainability, aesthetics, and responsibility in lighting design
Target Audience: Lighting designers, planners, technical directors, students in the field of event technology, as well as decision-makers in the cultural and event industry.
Aim of the Presentation: The presentation aims to familiarise the professional audience with a precise yet openly designed assessment framework that considers both technical and creative thinking. It seeks to provide a new language for the conversation between technology and art – and to contribute to data transparency, reflection, and further development.
