GenLight: A Dialogue between Light and Imagination

As a stage lighting designer, I’ve experienced how light transforms emotion, space, and narrative on many level. However its creative potential is often overlooked, and many people struggle to articulate their thoughts about lighting. This project is to make it easier to communicate ideas about light and to simplify the process of exploring lighting concepts.

GenLight is a tool designed to address these goals by turning lighting creation into an intuitive, real-time dialogue between humans and machines. It’s a generative lighting software that helps users develop stage lighting ideas, offering an accessible way to spark creative inspiration and generate customized visual references that support clearer, more effective communication with lighting designers.

GenLight leverages the capabilities of large language models to generate initial lighting concepts, while utilizing Unreal Engine 5’s real-time rendering technology to instantly visualize the results. Throughout this process, users gain valuable insights by clearly understanding the ideas and reasoning behind each generated scenario. It also supports continuous refinement , enabling users to iteratively expand and fine-tune their lighting designs. Finally, users can conveniently document their work through screenshot functionality, creating personalized visual references for future use or sharing.
